    The Interaction of Type II Diabetes and Gonadal Steroids on Cognition in Middle-Aged Women

    Diabetes is not commonly thought to be a women’s health issue, however, it appears to have an association with increased cognitive impairment in women during menopause as compared to women without diabetes (Espeland et al., 2011). The present study investigated the effects of type II diabetes and menopause on cognition in women between the ages of 46 and 55 years. To assess cognition, participants performed the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS; Randolph 1998), Letter Number Sequencing Test (Wechsler, 1997), Trail Making Test (Delis, 2001), Verbal Fluency Test (Delis, 2001), Wechsler Test of Adult Reading (Wechsler, 2001), and the Buschke Selective Reminding and Delayed Recall Tests (Buschke, 1974). Participants also answered questionnaires on mood, diabetes, and hormone and reproductive history. No premenopausal women or perimenopausal women with diabetes participated. Women were divided into the following groups to examine the interactions of diabetes and hormones on cognition: perimenopausal women without diabetes, postmenopausal women with diabetes, and postmenopausal women without diabetes. It was predicted that women with diabetes would score lower on all tests, with an emphasis on difficulties with executive function and memory. Postmenopausal women with diabetes showed lower scores in working memory, executive control, visual attention, task switching, and episodic memory as seen in data from the Letter Number Sequencing Test, Verbal Fluency Test, Trail Making Test, and Buschke Selective Reminding and Delayed Recall Tests, respectively. Perimenopausal women without diabetes showed lower scores than postmenopausal women with and without diabetes on verbal memory and executive control. The sample of eight women was small, though there were indications of differences between groups highlighting the need for further research

    The Role of Social Goals in Students’ Academic Help Seeking and Help Giving Among Peers

    This study examined the role of social achievement goals in academic help giving among peers within a high school. Students (n = 794) filled out surveys assessing their social goals, how often they are asked for help by their peers, and the type of help they gave to peers (instrumental vs. expedient). Controls included students’ grade point average, popularity, and personal help seeking preferences. Results demonstrated positive benefits of social development goals on students’ reports of how often they were asked for help and type of help given to their peers and negative impacts of social demonstration-avoidance goals on help giving. The findings complement achievement goal theory and provide a more comprehensive understanding of academic help seeking

    Optimal Monetary Policy, Commitment, and Imperfect Credibility

    In the conventional optimal monetary policy framework, two key assumptions underline the full commitment solution : Monetary authority is perfectly credible, and can commit for an infinite number of periods. Using a baseline forward-looking model, this study explores the implications of relaxing these assumptions in turn. First, finite lasting commitments are introduced using a stochastic exogenous process that generates policy reoptimizations. As a consequence, monetary policy is characterized with a continuum from pure discretion to full commitment. Second, we solve the optimal and robust targeting rules when the central bank confronts imperfect and/or uncertain credibility. Imperfect credibility is defined as a situation in which the private sector expects the commitment regime to end sooner than that is intended by the policy maker. The results indicate that, under imperfect credibility, optimal policy becomes observationally closer to the discretionary solution, the more being so as the degree of uncertainty rises. These findings may be insightful for explaining the observed near-discretionary behavior of the central banks, which indeed operate under imperfect credibility.Optimal Monetary Policy, Stabilization Bias, Imperfect Credibility, Discretion, Commitment

    Turkish Experience With Implicit Inflation Targeting

    This paper describes the challenges faced during the implementation of implicit inflation targeting in Turkey and evaluates the transition process to full-fledged inflation targeting. Using this background, the paper draws lessons for similar countries considering inflation targeting as a monetary policy regime. We argue that, the strategy of starting inflation targeting with an "implicit" version and gradually converging to full-fledged targeting can be a viable option when certain set of conditions is not satisfied. We conjecture, however, that implementing a "light" version?namely implicit inflation targeting?does not necessarily mean that the system would be exempt from all the prerequisites.     Excited muon searches at the FCC based muon-hadron colliders

    We study the excited muon production at the FCC based muon-hadron colliders. We give the excited muon decay widths and production cross section. We deal with the ÎŒp→Ό⋆qâ†’ÎŒÎłq\mu p\rightarrow\mu^{\star}q\rightarrow\mu\gamma q process and we plot the transverse momentum, rapidity and invariant mass distributions of final state particles to get the discovery cuts. By using discovery cuts, we get the mass limits for excited muons. It is shown that the discovery limits on the mass of Ό⋆\mu^{\star} are 2.2 TeV, 5.9 TeV and 7.5 TeV for ÎŒ63\mu63-FCC, ÎŒ750\mu750-FCC and ÎŒ1500\mu1500-FCC, respectively.Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures, 3 tables, version of published in Adv.     Age, growth, and reproduction of dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus) caught off the coast of North Carolina

    Age, growth, and reproductive data were obtained from dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus, size range: 89 to 1451 mm fork length [FL]) collected between May 2002 and May 2004 off North Carolina. Annual increments from scales (n=541) and daily increments from sagittal otoliths (n=107) were examined; estimated von Bertalanffy parameters were L∞ (asymptotic length)=1299 mm FL and k (growth coefficient)=1.08/yr. Daily growth increments reduced much of the residual error in length-at-age estimates for age-0 dolphinfish; the estimated average growth rate was 3.78 mm/day during the first six months. Size at 50% maturity was slightly smaller for female (460 mm FL) than male (475 mm FL) dolphinfish. Based on monthly length-adjusted gonad weights, peak spawning occurs from April through July off North Carolina; back-calculated hatching dates from age-0 dolphinfish and prior reproductive studies on the east coast of Florida indicate that dolphinfish spawning occurs year round off the U.S. east coast and highest levels range from January through June. No major changes in length-at-age or size-at-maturity have occurred since the early 1960s, even after substantial increases in fishery landings

    The role of goal structures and peer climate in trajectories of social achievement goals during high school

    Students’ social goals—reasons for engaging in interpersonal relationships with peers—are consequential for students’ interactions with their peers at school and for their well-being. Despite the salience of peer relationships during adolescence, research on social goals is generally lacking compared with academic goals, and it is unknown how these social goals develop over time, especially among high school students. The aim of the study was to assess trajectories of students’ social goals and to determine how relevant individual and contextual variables predicted initial levels and trajectories of students’ social goals. Participants were 9th through 12th grade students (N = 526) attending a U.S. high school. Students filled out surveys of their social goals (social development, social demonstration-approach, and social demonstration-avoidance) 6 times across 2 school years. Nonlinear growth curve analyses and piecewise growth curve analyses were used to assess trajectories of social goals across time. Students’ initial levels of social goals differed based on their gender, grade level, prior achievement, and perceptions of classroom goals structures and peer climate. Furthermore, despite substantial stability over time, the shapes of these goal trajectories were predicted by students’ gender, grade level, and perceptions of classroom goal structures and peer climate. In particular, students who perceived an increase in performance-avoidance classroom goals maintained higher demonstration social goals and decreased in developmental social goals over time, and students who perceived an increase in positive peer climate decreased in demonstration-avoidance social goals. Implications and directions for future research on social goals are discussed
